Giving Back Is Dead: Johanna Burton & Allan Schwartzman

In our first video podcast, Scott Stover sits down with two key art world figures, Johanna Burton and Allan Schwartzman. We explore everything from how institutions are affected by giving to analyzing the art market and trends. Listen in to hear their views on philanthropy and giving in 2022.

Johanna Burton is the Maurice Marciano Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Burton has been active in the contemporary art field for more than 20 years, including more than a decade of leadership experience in major museums and prominent arts and education institutions. She joined MOCA in November of 2021 after an accomplished tenure as Director of the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH.

Allan Schwartzman has provided short- and long-term bespoke advice for more than 30 years to influential and sophisticated collectors the world over, guiding them in the formation of their holdings in modern, post-war and contemporary art. He is founder and principal of the art advisory firm "Schwartzman&". Allan was a founding staff member of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City and served as curator from 1977 to 1980. He has been a frequent guest speaker and panelist at notable institutions and events around the world, and has written extensively about art for publications including The New Yorker and the New York Times. He serves on the Board of Artists Space, one of New York’s premier alternative spaces. Allan co-founded and led Art Agency Partners, an art advisory firm that was acquired by Sotheby’s. From 2016 to 2020, in addition to running the advisory practice, he served as Chairman and Co-Leader of the Fine Art Division at Sotheby’s.
